E-Space System Compared to Timber Framing
Timber Framing is a traditional way of constructing a hand hewn space
frame to which a roof and exterior wall cladding are attached. Many older
barns are constructed by this method and neighborhood “barn raisings”
were a social event in our early history.
Joinery was created by elaborate hand cut mortise and tenons held
together with tapered pegs. Old growth timbers are required for this
construction method which are now ecologically inappropriate and the
expensive skill level required to create the elaborate connections
between posts and beams is rapidly disappearing.
E-Space set out to duplicate the wonderful “cathedral-like” soaring
spaces inherent in the Timber Frame construction method but to do so in
an environmentally sensitive manner. What has evolved is the “greenest
of green” system of building components which utilizes a patent pending
connector system, state-of-the-art Engineered Lumber Beams and
Structural Insulated Panels. All engineered building components arrive at
the homesite already, sized and drilled for quick assembly by relatively
unskilled laborers.
Shipped unassembled on flat bed trucks, this package includes all the
parts necessary to erect a space frame with floors, sidewalls and roof
enclosed with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) clad with standing seam
metal roof (and solar panels where specified). If required, other light
weight metal roof patterns that simulate conventional materials are readily
available. All components are recyclable.
A final shipment of flat packaged, easy to assemble storage cabinets will
provide movable walls where privacy is not required. If desired, the
storage cabinet design can relate to the kitchen cabinets selected.
To this enclosed shell space, our (or the owner’s) architect and our (or the
owner’s) interior designer can collaborate on what the final outside finish
and the interior details will be. .
Within a two week period of time, an enclosed weatherproof space can
be created where plumbers, electricians, etc. can work in shirtsleeves in
below zero weather. Those trades will be local in almost every instance
but will be supervised by our E-Space trained construction supervisor.
In the early 1900s, Sears sold a pre-engineered house package that was
intended to replace Timber Framing as a construction method. Over
100,000 of those stick built homes were sold and many are still
occupied. One compromise in stick built framing is the elimination of the
soaring spaces inherent in Timber Framing but Sears was able to find a
huge market for a system of its pre-manufactured components even
though it generated small box-like spaces.
Simply speaking, E-Space is an updated hybrid of the Sears concept but
with unlimited vertical and horizontal design flexibility which will give
architects a toolkit of components to use in interesting and imaginative
ways.
The E-Space System provides the wonderful, soaring Timber Frame
interior experience without the costs and material limitations of timber
framing. What is lost by eliminating cracking, twisting heavy timbers and
their inherent, beautiful aesthetic is made up for by lower cost and the
elimination of cutting down old-growth trees to provide heavy timbers.
The E-Space component system is environmentally sound and the
exposed mechanical connection appeals to a whole new wave of loft
space lovers.
